Professional Camera Install vs a Big-Box Camera Kit: What You Actually Get

What a big-box camera kit leaves up to you, and what a professional install adds: hidden cable, a camera for each view, a recorder sized to the job, your own login, no contract, and local support.

A big-box camera kit and a professionally installed system can look alike on paper. Both have cameras, a recorder, and an app. The difference shows up once the cameras are on your building: where the cable runs, what each camera actually sees, and who you call when something needs a change. Here is what you get with each, so you can decide what your home or business needs.

A Kit Is Built for an Average House

A boxed kit is a fixed bundle. It comes with a set number of cameras, often all the same model, a recorder, and often premade cables in set lengths. It is designed for a typical house, not yours. Everything after the box is opened is up to you: where each camera goes, how the cable gets there, and how the recorder is set up.

That can work for a small, simple building if you are comfortable on a ladder and in an attic. For most homes and businesses, the parts the box can't do are the parts that decide whether the system is any good.

1. Cable You Don't See

Running cable is the hardest part of any camera install. When it is rushed, cable often ends up stapled along the siding or pushed through a window frame, where it is easy to see and easy to damage.

When TEK installs a system, we fish cable inside finished walls and hide it wherever the building allows, through the attic, the crawlspace, or a small opening behind the camera. Each camera gets one cable that carries both power and video back to the recorder. If your building already has camera coax in the walls, we can often reuse it instead of pulling new wire.

2. A Camera Chosen for Each View

A front door, a driveway, a dark side yard, and a parking lot are different jobs. A kit gives you the same camera for all of them.

On a TEK install, a technician walks the property, chooses the camera for each view, and marks where it goes. For example:

  • Views that matter after dark get a camera built to show color at night, such as our Dark X and OwlView cameras. Many cameras switch to black-and-white infrared at night, which shows a shape but not the color of a car or a jacket.
  • Busy areas can get cameras with people and vehicle alerts, so you hear about a person at the door instead of every branch that moves.
  • License plates need their own camera, set for height, angle, and shutter speed. A porch camera aimed down the driveway usually won't read a plate.

We test the picture before a camera goes on the wall.

3. A Recorder Sized to the Job

In a kit, the recorder is chosen for the box. On an install, it is chosen for the building. The recorders we install include 4-, 8-, and 16-channel models with built-in PoE ports, which power the cameras over the same cable that carries the video. Some models, like our 8-channel 4K recorder, have two hard drive bays, so there is room to add storage. If you expect to add cameras later, tell the technician, and the recorder can be sized with that in mind.

The video records to a surveillance hard drive in your building, not only to a cloud you rent. You can still watch live and recorded video from your phone, and you don't need a subscription to do it.

4. The Login Is Yours

Some consumer camera systems keep your video behind the maker's app account or a monthly cloud plan. With a recorder in your building, the system belongs to you. Many of the recorders we install let several people sign in at once, with the owner deciding what each account can do, and they keep a log of activity. That makes it easy to give a family member or an employee their own login without handing over the keys.

Whoever installs your system, ask for the administrator login. It is your hardware, so the main login should be yours.

5. No Contract, and the Hardware Is Yours

With TEK, you own the hardware and there is no contract. Nothing is scheduled until you approve a written quote. The camera hardware comes with the manufacturer's warranty: 3 years on CCTV cameras and recorders, and 2 years on other equipment.

If you want us to keep looking after the system, our Lifetime Equipment Replacement Plan is optional, with no contract, and you can cancel anytime. Leave it off and you still own everything.

6. Local Tech Support

With a boxed kit, help usually means a national support line or the return counter. TEK's shop is in Montgomery, and tech support is included. When you want a camera moved, a new phone added, or help finding a clip, you are calling the same local team that installed it.

Rather Do It Yourself?

That is a fair choice, and you don't have to settle for a boxed kit to do it. In our camera system builder at diyprosecurity.com, you pick how many cameras you need and which ones, and the recorder is sized to your camera count. Then you add the hard drive, cable, a PoE switch if you need one, and a monitor. Our technicians program and test the system before it ships, and tech support is included. If you get partway in and want help, we can quote the install, or help you find a local electrician or handyman.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a big-box kit ever enough?

For a small, simple building with easy attic access and a couple of views, it can be. The trade-off is that the placement, the cable, the setup, and the support are all on you.

How long does a professional install take to get going?

After you approve the quote and place the deposit, your system is typically ready to install within 5 to 8 days.

Do I need a monthly subscription?

Not to record or to watch your cameras from your phone. The video stays on the recorder in your building.

Do you serve my area?

TEK installs in the I-275 loop and the area inside it. Outside the loop, call for a quote.
